On 31st January 2017, the Class Cava Cup took place at the Grosvenor’s Red Bar in the heart of London. Top mixologists form across the UK battled it out to create the best cocktail using the Cava as its main ingredient.
Top judges from the industry had a tough time selecting the winner from the 11 participants who had created the innovative cava cocktails that were pitched against each other.
Vitalij Gutovski, mixologist at The Lobby Bar 1, Aldwych, won the Class Cava Cup with his cocktail “5 Element”, acclaimed by judges for its complexity of flavours and delicate balance in bringing cava to the fore.
Emily Jade, from London Fields Brewery, was a runner up with here creamy Crema Catalana as was Giacomo Guanera, from the The Churchill, with his Club Amigo, inspired by the smoky, atmospheric bars of La Havana, Cuba.
Commenting on the winning cocktails, president of the CRDO del Cava, Pere Bonet said, “These cocktails have been a real experience for me, it was a tough task to choose the winner. Our contestants are like magicians, whisking up wonderful creations like Druides or alchemists – proving the versatility and adaptability of Cava to any style of cocktail.”
The winner will enjoy a three night break in Barcelona and the Cava region, with a friend, to learn more about Spain’s unique sparkling wine. You can read about their trip later this year.
