Cava de Paraje Calificado

London’s iconic venue The Gherkin hosts the international
launch of the recently created premium classification from
the DO Cava – Cava de Paraje Calificado

Tuesday 21st November, 2017 – Last night’s launch is part of a global initiative by the DO Cava to promote the Cava de Paraje Calificado, which started over three years ago. The purpose of the launch was to speak directly to key influencers, press and buyers from the on- and off-trade about the new top tier Cavas.

These super premium Cavas are currently being launched in international markets with retail prices of over £50 a bottle. Pedro Bonet, President of the DO Cava, considers that the Cava de Paraje Calificado wines do ‘justice to the quality’ of Spain’s most famous sparkling wine and define it as ‘…the prestigious, high quality wine it is’, at a global level. He also is confident that this new quality stratum in the DO will ‘encourage other winemakers to strive to produce better and better wines’.

This tasting is a result of three and half years’ hard work by the technical and administrative staff at the DO Cava, which brought about the approval, by ministerial order, to officially create the classification of the Cava de Paraje Calificado: the objective being to give recognition to those wines at the peak of quality production in Europe.

Over 100 key influencers from across the UK trade gathered to participate in the exclusive master class, led by Pedro Ballesteros MW, on the newly approved ultra-premium category.

This is the first time that a tasting of its kind had been held outside Spain. Guests were able to taste a selection of nine of the top, terroir sparkling wines during the tasting, where each of the producers introduced the unique qualities of their own wines.
